Philip Caputo is the main character in the book "A Rumor of War". Philip is a man who served in the Vietnam War for the Marines. He was raised in Westchester, Illinois to an average American family. Philip is an educated man who had good grades through out high school. He liked school and liked growing up as an average man. When he was twenty-four years old Philip wanted a change in his life. He liked the idea of being in war and killing other people. He did not want to grow up as a boring man. He was seeking action. The Marines is what fufilled that need for Philip.
One day Philip talked to a Marine recruter. Philip was convinced and he joined the Marines. Philip is a man that did not have the best physique. That was changed when he went through the Marines boot camp. His body was very fit and ready for combat. Philip is skinny and in shape man. His hair is a shade of black with out facial hair. He always enjoyed a journey and the Marines gave him that. When Philip was sent to Vietnam he was wounded by machine gun fire. He survived but has a large wound.
At the end of this book Philip is a new man. He was a man who had been through a war. He had changed from a normal man to a killing machine. He had learned how to kill a man with out batting an eye. The Vietnam War had changed Philip Caputo's life forever. Before the war Philip wanted to change his life from a boring one into an exciting one. That is what he got and he also recieved more than that.
